(2) Betta imbellis, 1 Male and 1 Female.
Betta imbellis are a wild-type Betta subspecies from the Splendens complex, which is the same cluster of species that domestic bettas were originally bred from. Much like domestic bettas, Betta imbellis breed with a bubble nest, not mouthbrooding like some other wild betta species.
They are much calmer than domestic bettas, leading to their “Peaceful Betta” common name. These fish can live in breeding colonies; Multiple male fish can coexist with enough space and enough females present. (Please note: Multiple males must have at least 3 females present in a minimum of 40 gallons)
These fish appreciate softer water and a blackwater environment, but much like domestic bettas are truly hardy to a wide variety of water parameters. Like most fish, a stable and balanced aquarium is much more important for them than specific parameter numbers.
